What are the rules and regulations for Amateur Boxing in NZ?

by Mark Brimblecombe  [Tuesday 7 August 2007]

Last year I came by a copy of The Regulations of Boxing New Zealand (Inc) - Annex B - Regulations for the Conduct of Amateur Boxing in New Zealand. A copy of this document in its latest revision should be available from your local boxing association or by contacting Boxing New Zealand Incorporated.

If you click on the following links you will open a PDF copy of the documents I've seen:

Regulations for the Conduct of Amateur Boxing in New Zealand

Regulations for the Conduct of Amateur Boxing between Female Competitors

It is important that every amateur boxer reads and understands these rules, or if they are illiterate have their trainer go over the rules with them!  If their trainer is illiterate, then we're stuffed or the job is made more difficult for referees.

It would be interesting to get your comment on these Regulations. What do you think should be changed to make the sport better? I'm sure that any change would need to conform to AIBA rules (to see these, click here). But you know us Kiwis are masters of innovation and are pretty good non-conformists!

Reading over the AIBA rules may also give us all a greater understanding and respect for referees and judges. Hey... the AIBA rules say that "a referee, before officiating in any International tournament conducted under these rules, shall undergo a medical examination as to his physical fitness for carrying out his duties in the ring." Women referees must be exempt! Anyway, perhaps our referees should line up at tournaments with the boxers for their pre-bout medical. :-)
Did you know that "when it is necessary the boxer may take off the underwear on the scale only" Now there's a photo opportunity!
What about the Chowdhry Scoring System (page 22)? That needs to be changed. I'll write an article soon about that.
