The most popular
NZ boxing website last year was
www.rodneyboxing.org
which I designed and developed. Its success was mainly due to
frequent updates and many new photos, and its demise seems to be due
to the opposite. Well, now that I’m not involved in Rodney Boxing
and its website, I’m
hoping that this independent site will gain popularity.
The Boxing New
Zealand Inc. website
www.boxingnz.org.nz has improved a lot over the last six months.
It is a good resource, especially for the news, results, and the
calendar, but has a few main weaknesses in my opinion. Firstly,
there is no up-to-date list of boxing clubs for NZ. This would be
really helpful for so many who want to contact clubs for tournament
nominations, etc. I
attempted last year to do something like this with
http://www.rodneyboxing.org/other_associations.htm by listing
all known gyms under their respective association. Perhaps I should
try and continue with this listing on BoxingNZ.com since it would
appear that Boxing New Zealand may never get there (the census
results they have got would be useful).
Secondly, I think it is imperative that boxers and clubs have
access to the rules of boxing in NZ. I did put this on the Rodney
site, but was asked to remove it because some of the rules were not
up to date. Fair enough, but the existing info needs to be
somewhere, so it will soon be back on this website.
Last year when
doing the Rodney site there were times when I wrote comments and
criticisms about some tournaments that I attended, resulting in
requests to remove these comments. I felt obligated to do so, since
I then represented a boxing association and member of Boxing New
Zealand Inc. But now I’m not in this position.
So now there is freedom to vent my spleen if need be.
I have a great
deal of respect and appreciation for ALL those involved in this
sport, especially officials. However, none are beyond constructive
criticism! It is my hope therefore that BoxingNZ.com can be a
website where any person can say what they think and feel. I will
moderate out comments of defamation, insult, and slander, for as
long as comments are emailed to me. If we get to have a blog working
on this website, then it will be total freedom of speech.
Many of you will
know that I have little experience in boxing. I’ve never been a
boxer... never punched anyone, never been punched by anyone! My
involvement in the sport came about solely because my son Isaac
Brimblecombe began boxing a few years ago. His training began with
Lape Tulusi at the ABA, then with Brett Farquharson at Manly Boxing
Gym, and now with Henry Schuster at the ABA. It has been great to
get to know these trainers and so many others in the sport. Brett
and I started the Rodney District Boxing Association, and that
helped me get to know many of the officials and Boxing New Zealand
people.
This last week
Isaac has had a shoulder operation. He won’t be back into boxing
until 2008. But when he does get back... watch out for this senior
middleweight contender!
Peter Derrick
from the North Harbour Boxing Association has asked me to help with
the live results for the Boxing NZ National Championships in Sept
07. My intention is to put these on the BoxingNZ.com website, and
promote this website at that event, along with my role as
photographer.
There are
currently two internet domain names that own and use ‘boxingnz’ in
their domain name: (1) This website, and (2) Boxing New Zealand
Incorporated (www.boxingnz.org.nz).
I note that if
anyone would like to purchase and use the following domain names for
their website, they are currently available: boxingnz.co.nz,
boxingnz.net.nz, boxingnz.net, boxingnz.org, boxingnz.info,
boxingnz.biz.
There is a
question and concern that has been directed to me about using ‘boxingnz’
in the domain name, or in the name (e.g. logo and header on webpages)
since this may conflict with the identity and web presence of Boxing
New Zealand Incorporated. That maybe so, though I have no intention
with this quite different website to give the impression that it
represents Boxing New Zealand in any way.
Does anyone know
if anyone owns a registered brand name ‘boxingnz’?
Irrespective of whether there is or not, an internet domain
name is a different matter. Unless someone can give me a compelling
reason, and better still a legal reason, why I should relinquish
ownership or use of
www.boxingnz.com, then it will stay the same.
